When the Chicago Bears signed Chester Taylor last week, we knew it would mean a decrease in Matt Forte's fantasy value. But from the words of offensive coordinator Mike Martz, the dreaded running back-by-committee situation could be upcoming in the Windy City. Martz intends to utilize both Taylor and Forte at running back and insists that it doesn't matter which player is officially listed on the depth chart with the No. 1 offense. "We'have two starters," Martz said according to the team's official Web site. "That's how we look at it. We're fortunate to have two starters. As you look around the National Football League, the teams that are running the ball well, they all have two starters. They've got two backs. It's not a 1-2 punch as much as either one of those guys can carry the load. That's just how they approach it. They will share duties." FANTASY ANALYSIS: Does that mean that someone different will carry the load each week? Who knows if this is going to be a 50-50 split or whatever. It's clear that the Bears' coaches, even a pretty new one like Martz, don't have a ton of faith in Forte. But this sounds like a lot of unpredictable games for the two backs. I will probably stay away from both of them in drafts unless they fall way too far.
And I know this sounds like a lot of panic, but keep in mind that one major injury or one poor training camp could makes this much clearer. [a href="http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/nfl_news.cfm?news_id=1304"Go To Page/a]div class="feedflare"

When Kurt Warner retired in January, Matt Leinart was unofficially named the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback. But credit head coach Ken Whisenhunt. He isn't making anything official. He is going to have the still-young and still-unproven NFL quarterback show that he deserves to start. Whisenhunt said in a Tuesday radio interview that the Cardinals would sign a quarterback to compete with Leinart for the starting spot. Whisenhunt said he has a "great deal" of confidence in Leinart. But he said he won't just hand the job over to Leinart until he "goes to three Pro Bowls" and the Super Bowl, as Kurt Warner did. There were rumors on Tuesday that the Cardinals will consider bringing in recently cut quarterback Derek Anderson to push Leinart. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I think this is a great idea because, really, what has Leinart shown in this league that states he deserves to be a starter just because the guy in above him on the depth chart retired? Whisenhunt wants competition and I think only good can come from that. Granted, the pool of available QBs is very shallow and maybe none of them will be as good as Leinart. But Leinart has thrown more interceptions than turnovers and has a career completion percentage less than 60 percent. He shouldn't be given anything. Thus, we'll likely have another QB battle to watch during training camp. No matter who wins, he will be a QB outside of fantasy's top 20. Quarterback Jim Sorgi has become sort of a cult figure in the NFL for backing up a guy who has never missed an NFL game in his 12 seasons, Peyton Manning. Now Sorgi will do the same for his brother Eli, who has started 87 consecutive games. Sorgi signed a one-year deal to join the New York Giants on Monday. This occurs two days after the Giants lost their main 2009 backup, David Carr, to the San Francisco 49ers. Sorgi has played in 14 games in six seasons with the Colts. He has thrown six touchdowns and one interception in that time. The 29-year-old Sorgi went on injured reserve last December with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder. His agent, Matt Brei, said Sorgi has been throwing since January and has had no further problems. He also said that Sorgi's shoulder was examined by two noted orthopedic surgeons -- Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lewis Yocum -- and both have cleared him to play. The Giants are saying that Sorgi will compete with second-year pro Rhett Bomar for the spot to be Eli Manning's first replacement. But with the experience that he has in backing up Peyton, Sorgi is pretty much locked into that No. 2 role. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Fantasy impact? Somewhere around nil unless Manning gets injured, obviously. Sorgi's pro career path has been a pretty interesting one. He has one of the easiest high-profile jobs in the league. Everyone knew it was going to happen; it just wasn't official yet. Now it's official: The Cleveland Browns have cut quarterback Derek Anderson. Anderson came to the Browns off the waiver wire in 2007 and turned in a tremendous season with more than 3,700 yards and 29 touchdowns. The team signed him to a three-year, $24 million deal soon after that season ended, but he was never able to reproduce those type of results. In the 2008 and 2009 seasons, he played in a combined 18 games and completed just 48 percent of his passes. He threw 12 touchdowns to 18 interceptions and was benched during each year. Anderson became expendable when the team acquired quarterback Seneca Wallace in a trade with Seattle on Monday. Anderson was due a $2 million roster bonus March 19 and was scheduled to earn a base salary of $7.45 million in 2010. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Anderson may have decision-making and accuracy issues, but he won't be available for long. It's already been reported that the Arizona Cardinals will give him a long look and might bring him in to push Matt Leinart. There have also been reports that Brady Quinn may be traded out of Cleveland soon. Very quickly, it's looking more and more likely that Wallace will be the team's opening-day starter. Who would have thought that 48 hours ago? [a href="http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/nfl_news.cfm?news_id=1302"Go To Page/a]div class="feedflare"

By Sunday, we will know which 65 teams will comprise the NCAA Tournament field, but there plenty of key games to play before we get there. Some squads are playing to secure the seeding while others need to win just to keep on playing. Here are the battles to keep an eye on... The Pittsburgh Steelers signed a couple of wide receivers on Monday who will do most of their damage on special teams, but one could also end up playing as the team's slot receiver. Pittsburgh signed former Steeler Antwaan Randle El and Arnaz Battle. Both players signed three-year deals. Financial terms of Randle El's contract were not yet disclosed. Battle's deal is worth $3.975 million with a $975,000 signing bonus. Randle El was drafted by the Steelers in 2002 and played four seasons with them before joining the Redskins. He said Monday night that he feels like he is home again and is shooting to become the team's No. 3 wide receiver. quot; We've talked about just playing No. 3 receiver," Randle El told The Washington Post. "That's all we talked about. I'm not even sure about punt return, now that I think about it. The way I always look at it, I'm going to go in and be No. 3." Battle will contribute less on offense than Randle El. His biggest task will be upgrading Pittsburgh's poor special teams unit. Battle has spent his seven seasons in the league with the 49ers. His best season was in 2006 when he caught 59 passes for 686 yards. Last season, he caught just five passes in 15 games. FANTASY ANALYSIS: These moves likely mean that Limas Sweed is done in the Steel City. The 2008 second-rounder caught just one pass in 2009. He was a stud at Texas, but he's been nothing much in the NFL. Speaking of nothing much, Battle will continue to be that for fantasy players. If Randle El wins the No. 3 WR gig, he'll probably post another 40-50-catch season with a few touchdowns. He has the most fantasy potential of anyone mentioned in this note, but he's viable in leagues with 16 teams or more. The Cleveland Browns couldn't decide on a starting quarterback in 2009. They went back and forth and back again. For 2010, maybe that decision was made for them on Monday, and it isn't Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson. The Browns acquired seven-year pro and long-time backup quarterback Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick. Wallace will reunite with Mike Holmgren, who serves as the Browns' general manager. He was Wallace's head coach in Seattle from 2003-2008. Wallace's best season was 2008 when he started eight games and threw for 1,532 yards and 11 touchdowns, both career-highs. Wallace started two games last season while Matt Hasselbeck was hurt and has started just 14 games in his career. quot; This will give Seneca a chance for a fresh start," Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement. "The Browns front office's familiarity with his abilities will give him an opportunity to compete for playing time. We wish him nothing but the best." FANTASY ANALYSIS: This move all but makes certain that Derek Anderson won't be on the Browns by March 19 when he is due a $2 million roster bonus. Wallace's athleticism makes him a somewhat interesting starter, but he has never been very accurate in the NFL and has a problem hanging onto the ball. Still, he could probably produce better numbers than Brady Quinn. I think Wallace is actually a slight favorite right now to start the season for Cleveland.
