The art of sliding, it seems to me, is something that could be taught by any Little League coach. When you're the New York Jets, though, and the man you're teaching to slide is worth $44.5 million, you might as well bring in the best sliding coach you can find.

How about the manager of the reigning World Series champions? Will that do?

That's who the Jets got. Joe Girardi, manager of the neighborly New York Yankees, took a little field trip over to the Jets' practice facility yesterday to teach the Sanchize how to slide. Here's head coach Rex Ryan, via the New York Post:

“[Sanchez] is too valuable, and he needs to understand that we need him out there and people are going to take shots at him if he doesn’t start sliding.

“I really did want to make an emphasis to Mark and get the best guy that we can in the area. I made a call to the Yankees, and I was really happy that Girardi came over and did that for us.”

I guess you might as well take advantage of the resources that are available to you. It might be overdoing things – similar to calling in Dr. Scholl to teach Sanchez how to clip his toenails – but if Girardi's there and willing to help, why not?

Sliding is, after all, an important skill for a quarterback to have. Sanchez has been going head-first, which might get a guy more yards, but it's also more likely to shorten his career. If he goes feet first, once he begins the slide, the defense is not allowed to hit him. If he slides head-first, though, it's open season. And since he's leading with his head, that's probably the body part most likely to get cracked.
